During the second week of the Spring holidays two TGS students, Ben Hood (Year 9) and Tomas Lunt (Year 11) both represented Queensland during the annual Volleyball Nationals competition held on the Gold Coast.
Ben Hood, at 14 years old, is a junior member of the Queensland premier Under 15 team and played the week as an opposite (right side) hitter and as pass/hitter (left side) and had great success with powerful hits, great defence and strong serving. Tomas Lunt (16) is no stranger to state representation having been a part of the U15 team of 2017. This year he represented the State U17 premier team as a middle hitter and was an absolute strength in attack and defence providing confidence and security to the team.
Both teams made it to the gold medal matches on Saturday, 6 October. The Queensland U17 team finished the competition with eight wins from eight matches and never dropping a set comfortably winning the gold medal match 3-0 against Western Australia.
The Queensland U15 team faced South Australia in the gold medal match, a team that they had previously lost both round matches to earlier that week. The boys rallied and backed each other up to come away victors 3-1.
Both Ben and Tomas have been selected as a part of the Australian development camp that concludes on Tuesday, 9 October. Tomas also selected in the U17 All Star 7 for the competition. A great privilege.
We look forward to welcoming both young men back to the school for term 4 and bringing with them the experience of representing at this elite level as we enter our preparations for the 2019 GPS season in Term 1.
