Volleyball: Schools’ Cup success
This past weekend, 31 May – 2 June, Toowoomba was host to the Queensland Volleyball Intermediate Schools Cup. This competition showcases some of the best school aged (Year 9 and Year 10) teams in the state with many participants from the south-east corner but also those as far as Proserpine in the central coast. This year TGS fielded three teams; Year 10 Division 1, Year 10 Division 2 and Year 9 Division 1.
The Year 9 Division 1 team won five from seven matches securing the Bronze medal and qualifying for the coveted Year 10 Honours in the QVISC in 2020. An opportunity to compete against the best of the best in the State. Coach Mr Allan Smiddy led the boys (Hayden Kenny, Ruben Geldenhuys, Ned Beasley, Will Galvin, Reghan Bayles, Jamie Watson, James Darlington and Sam Noble) well this weekend and it is clear to see how much time playing together (GPS and Tuesday night) has done to create a cohesive unit.
The Year 10 Division 2 team won three from seven matches placing eighth. This is a great result from a group of young boys from both Year 10 and Year 9 (Jack Rattray, Jet Bennett, Jacob Meyer, Liam Wilson, Joe Currie, Jesse Joubert and Will Stunden) that struggled to all meet at the same time to train – in fact I don’t believe we had a single complete team session with these boys. Coach Mr Sam Williams brought them together well and to notch a couple of wins is a remarkable achievement.
The Year 10 Division 1 team really came out firing. Winning four from seven matches, the boys won the crucial semi-final (a rematch against Burnside SHS) to see them contend for the Gold medal. The final match opposition, Mansfield SHS, were excellent in their execution and defense and well deserved their win as we matched them point for point in the first set, but did not maintain momentum in the second. Like the Year 9 team, these young men (Ben Hood, Ollie Jillett, Charlie Armytage, Will Hurn, Andrew Byrnes, Aiden Hunter and Tom Cocks) now qualify in 2020 for the Year 11 Honours division.
Alongside this, what truly capped the weekend off was playing at TGS. Like during our GPS season, the guests to the school, visiting team, coaches and parents not only marveled at the facility, but were truly welcomed by our wonderful Volleyball Supporters Group. Running the canteen yesterday with hot food and warm drinks, made all who came comfortable.
